MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Ouachita Parish leaders are celebrating a grant used for battling the state's obesity problem. About a half-million dollars are going into building and repairing sidewalks and other infrastructure to encourage walking along Ticheli Road in Monroe. Dozens of Shady Grove Elementary students are testing out the new path. Students and staff are aiming to promote a healthier lifestyle in their backyards.
"I think the students really enjoyed it. a lot of them, maybe understand now, that walking can be fun and it's not something you have to set aside time to do," Reading Teacher Natasha Jones said. "I mean, you can just do that on a daily basis."
Parish leaders say 23 million children and teens are considered overweight or obese in the nation. So, more sidewalks are on the way in Monroe, they said, to get more residents walking.
