2 alarm fire strikes Alexandria school

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La., (KNOE 8 news) - A fire broke out early Friday morning at Martin Park Elementary school in Alexandria.

The good news is that there were no kids at school when the fire broke out, but the bad news is that damage was severe enough to close the school for a while.

The Alexandria fire department told our sister station, KALB, that a maintenance worker discovered smoke in the building when he arrived for work about 5:30 Friday morning. He called the fire department and shortly thereafter some 30 firemen were on the scene.

Fire investigators say they think the fire began somewhere near the middle of the school in an area mostly containing classrooms. Part of the damage sustained occurred when the roof over the center part of the school collapsed during the fire.

Students coming in to attend class were re-routed to another nearby school so their parents could pick them up.

The investigation into the cause of the fire continues, and the school board is working to decide how they will handle classes next week when school is scheduled to resume.
