3 Year Old West Nile Case

WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Colder temperatures for the beginning of the week, but that doesn't mean you should forget about those pesky mosquitoes that may carry the West Nile Virus.

There are currently 8 cases in Ouachita Parish.

Three year old Kayli Kelly is running around, playing, and smiling today, but three weeks ago it was a different story.

Roxanne Odom, Kayli's mother says, "I thought I was going to lose her."

Odom says that's when her daughter starting showing symptoms of the West Nile Virus, "she was burning hot, I immediately got her up, I got her in a luke warm bath gave her some Tylenol, I laid her back down and about 30 minutes later she was watching cartoons and just started throwing up."

That's when Odom rushed Kayli to the doctor to find answers, "we waited seven days later and we found out she had West Nile."

The good news was it was the West Nile Fever, a less serious type of the disease.

Doctors told Kayli's parents to keep a close eye on her, "they said to watch out for the swelling to the brain and they said it's still possible and they said, to watch out for her wobbling, or looking like she's really really dizzy they said that's sign of her brain swelling."

Odom says thankfully they didn't see Kayli's symptoms get worse, but she encourages parents to get their child tested if they show any of the symptoms.

Kayli has recovered from the virus.

The Mosquito Abatement director still warns, mosquito season runs through the first on November and to still take the necessary precautions.
