Union Parish seeing some scams

Posted: Updated:

UNION PARISH, La., (KNOE 8 News) - Union Parish residents have been receiving scam telephone calls, mail and e-mail messages.

At least one person has fallen victim to one of the scams. The sheriff said the victim was told he had won a Mercedes-Benz and $2 million in prize money. All he had to pay was a $300 processing fee. He sent the money but got nothing in return.

"This is just a bad way to lose your money, so think before falling for such stories," Sheriff Bob Buckley said, adding that if it seems too good to be true, it likely is...and is likely a scam.

The callers are mostly from out of the country that makes prosecution mostly impossible, detectives reported. The incidents also should be reported to the Northeast Louisiana Better Business Bureau.

Buckley said to never give anyone any personal information like your bank account number or Social Security number.
