Chlorine causes water woes

WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Cadeville Water District leaders said a high amount of chlorine pumping through its system made its way into the faucets of homes. Residents believe that has opened the door to a string of health concerns.

"It just had fumes come up and hit me in my face," Natalie Miletello said.

Every morning, Miletello uses a face cleanser that has peroxide in it until something went wrong when mixed with this water.

"When the fumes hit me, it took my breath. I rinsed my face off and got out of the tub," the expectant mother said.

What's in that tub, came from The Cadeville Water District in West Monroe. The manager, Tom Owens, spoke to KNOE 8 News over the phone. He said Tuesday, a chlorine pump stopped working properly and spilled high doses of the chemical into the neighborhood pipes. Owens believed the level was not toxic.

Saint Francis Hospital Health leaders said water companies typically use chlorine in their water, but too much isn't good.

"If you get to a level where you can smell the chlorine, or you can taste it then that's probably not safe," Nurse Practitioner Deborah Blanson said.

Blanson believes you should boil your water or buy it in bottles if the chlorine is at a high level in your water. She also said you should contact the EPA or your water company.

Other neighbors, off camera, said they're having to foot the bill for new clothes after some of their shirts and pants faded in the washing machine and some are mainly upset at the lack of warning.

"They did not inform anybody, there was no calls," Miletello said.

The water district said pipes are being flushed out. The chlorine pump stopped working properly, managers said, when they were all in a meeting outside the parish.

Despite the concerns, the water company has not given a Boil Advisory notice.
