S.W.A.T. Takes Police Over the Edge

Posted: Updated: Oct 10, 2012 06:39 PM

RUSTON, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Take a deep breath, lean back and work your feet down the wall.

Those were only a handful of orders given on Wednesday as the Ruston Police hosted their first S.W.A.T. school.

This week-long, 50-hour training is taking nine officers from Ruston to Union Parish to Grambling and making them more active.

"Maneuvering, noise flash devices, the flash bangs, gas, chemical, rappelling for team building, vehicle assaults, tactical movements," Ruston Police Lt. Tim Parker said.

Wednesday's training started dozens of feet in the air.

"Looks pretty easy 'till you look over that edge," said Ouachita Parish Reserve Deputy and 22-year Rappelling Master, Ted Kincannon.

This training doesn't come easy.

"It gives them the basics to go back to their units or their departments and to be able to react more tactically," Parker said.

It's exercises like these, rappelling down a 40-foot wall, that give these officers the training they need.

"We have used this in rescue efforts. We've assisted the fire departments in rescue, high-angle rescues," Kincannon said. "We do have, we're trained, we have capabilities to do elevated assaults."

Officers said this can save their lives and the lives of their squads.

It certainly helped Parker when he was facing guns pointed at him.

"When the shooting happened several years ago, we just fell back on our training, moved into the room as the fire was going on," he said. "You didn't think about it. You reacted to your training and that's what we tell these guys."

While this training might not look safe, it's designed to keep these officers safe for the rest of their careers.

Rappelling wasn't the only exercise officers did.

Many of the other exercises performed on Wednesday were too confidential for our cameras to see.
