"Carpenters for Christ" Lend a Hand To Local Church

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Columbia Pentecostal Church needs help building a new church; and one volunteer group, who travels all over the country, made their way to Louisiana for the first time.

Pastor David McKeithen says, "we are on the levee and the levee is crumbling, and we're going to have to build a new church so we had to move here, and we were blessed with a group of men called carpenters for Christ."

Carpenters for Christ is a volunteer group based out of Montgomery, Alabama, but project coordinator, Billy Pollard says the men are from all over the country; "South Florida, Kentucky, Arkansas, Georgia, and all the men pay they're own way to come on these trips, we have full time cooks that cook our meals, and we've been doing this since 1987 and we build at least one church a year sometimes two."

Columbia Pentecostal Church was lucky to be their second project of the year.

Pastor David McKeithen says if they weren't able to receive this help, they didn't know how they could build.

McKeithen says, "when they said we had to leave we may of have 15 or 20 people and we didn't know what we were going to be faced with as far as buying property, property is hard to find but again the lord opened this up for us, we've got 2 and a half acres here that's paid for."

The church held a special prayer meeting for the new building and allowed congregation members to write their favorite bible verse.

Pastor McKeithen says, "some of them put it in memory of their parents, but just to say they are apart of this church and we were the when it was built."

He says they hope the new building will expand their congregation.

The current church has been used for the past 12 years.

Pastor McKeithen says they hope to be done by December.
