Median barriers coming to Arkansas

Posted: Updated: Oct 10, 2012 04:05 PM

LITTLE ROCK, Ar., (KNOE 8 News) - The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department is planning to install cable median barriers on nearly 400 miles of Arkansas freeways over the next three years. The project is expected to be funded with some $74 million in federal funds.

The agency says the most dangerous crashes on freeways are where a vehicle crosses into oncoming traffic. And at present, only about 37 miles of Arkansas highways have the median barriers, with about 70 more miles currently being installed.

Studies have shown that installing median barriers results in a sharp decrease in median crossover deaths, so the widespread  installations will begin shortly after the first of the year.
