Capital Charges for El Dorado Double Murder

EL DORADO, AR. (KNOE 8 News) - For nearby neighbor and cousin of the murder suspect, Jimmy Mitchell, the lives of his quiet neighborhood and his family changed last Friday night.

"It was just pow! Pow!" Mitchell said. "When I heard the shots, I had a shotgun in here. I came back in to get my gun and I come back in the house because I didn't even know what was going on."

The gunshots brought in El Dorado police.

Police found 23-year-old Chesniey Hall and 39-year-old Daniel Jackson shot and dead at the scene in a blue car in a wooded thicket.

But Hall's three-year-old boy was still alive.

"That was a terrible situation to have that little kid back in the car," Mitchell said. "He will never forget that."

The child is now in the hands of the Arkansas Department of Human Services.

"More than likely, they will do a background check on the family, on Ms. Hall's family," Captain Kevin Holt with the El Dorado Police said. "Potentially release the child back to her family."

After interviewing neighbors, police tracked down and arrested Johnny Tubbs.

At a court hearing on Monday, Tubbs was charged with two counts of capital murder, one count of endangering the welfare of a minor and felony possession of a firearm.

"It can be a death penalty case," Holt said. "Or life in prison."

For Mitchell, he said his family's at a loss over one of their own allegedly gunning the victims down.

"So far, well, we don't talk. They're angry and everything like that but everything's in God's hands," Mitchell said. "They talk about 'we're going to do this, we're going to do that.' Don't nobody know who's going to do anything."

As for the scene of the shooting, all that's left is a stuffed bear hidden among empty liquor bottles and two bright flowers stuck side-by-side in the ground.

Johnny Tubbs's court date is set for November.
