MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - An update on a deadly house fire in Monroe that occurred Friday, October 5. KNOE 8 News is learning that the cause of the fire that killed 78 year old Frances Mitchell is still being investigated.

Debbie Rivers has been Frances Mitchell's neighbor since 1985 and she says, "the last few days I've just been so sad, just not knowing that she's there, I mean you know we didn't always see each other but just knowing she's not there anymore."

Rivers says she became apart of her family, "we always included her in whatever we did, you know if we had a birthday or holiday or anything she always came over and visited with us and had dinner."

She says Mitchell was suffering from MS, and it was hard for her to get around, but Mitchell wanted to be independent for as long as she could.

Rivers says, "she just wanted to be on her own and like she was many years ago and I think as neighbors we all tried to help her be as independent as she possibly could be."

Monroe Fire Department Chief Investigator David Hill says they still aren't sure what exactly caused the fire, "we conducted an investigation at the fire scene we've determined the fire to be incendiary in nature with multiple points of origin."

Rivers said it's still hard for her to believe she's gone, "just the way that she dies, and none of us were far away, it's too bad that none of us could help her."

Rivers says Ms. Mitchell will be greatly missed.

Neighbors say 78 year old Mitchell lived alone.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
