MONROE, La., (KNOE 8 News) - This year's city-wide fire drill is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 10th at 11:45am.
The Monroe City Fire Department points out that this will be an excellent opportunity to test your company's evacuation plan in the event of a fire. The Department is encouraging local schools, businesses, hospitals, daycares, hotels, businesses and residents to participate. The 2012 theme is "Be Rabbit Ready! Have two ways out!" Again, participating in the City-wide FIRE DRILL will help in preparing everyone to properly respond during a real emergency.
Fire Prevention Week will be October 7 - 13. A complete list of related activities will be released soon.
As the 2012 theme suggests, every home, office, school and other buildings should have a fire escape plan for two ways out of the building. This plan should address two basic goals: (1) Evacuating the building in a quick and safe manner with two ways out; and, (2) Being able to account for everyone to ensure that everyone has made it safely out of the building. Having a simple action plan in place can make a major difference in the event of a real emergency. If you don't currently have a plan for your home or business, the Monroe Fire Department has handout material to help you create a plan or learn about other Fire Safety related subjects.
Because they definitely save lives, it is one of the fire department goals for every home in the city to have a working smoke detector in place to provide an early warning detection system. Free smoke detectors are available at the Monroe Public Safety Center, located at 1810 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive (U.S. 165 South).
