Caldwell parish teen dies in car crash

CALDWELL PARISH, La. (KNOE 8 News) - One teen is dead and another behind bars after a Caldwell Parish car crash over the weekend.

Now the community is reeling after the tragic, but preventable accident. For the Calhouns, there's one less person at the dinner table tonight. The family is devastated after a Saturday morning accident killed their step-son Michael Woods. He was just 17.

"I couldn't believe he was gone and I was far away, hoping it wasn't true." said William Calhoun, step father of Michael Woods. The skid marks are physical marks of now lasting emotional scars. "It's tragic" said Calhoun.

It was on Louisiana highway 849 where Michael and two friends were driving. They tried to pass a pickup truck, they crossed into the left lane while picking up speed, only to swerve back too soon, clipping the truck then rolling into a barbed fence.

Michael, not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the car. With Michael's keys still in the ignition, the surviving passengers penned the accident on him. But there's a twist. The 17-year-old wasn't behind the wheel.

In fact he was laying in the back seat with his buddy Eugene Williams driving."He felt bad about it and came forward, he did the right thing." said state police trooper Al Paxton.

Williams now faces charges of negligent homicide and obstruction of justice, leaving two young lives ruined and two families heartbroken over an accident that didn't have to happen.

Eugene Williams faces up to 10-years in prison and a 15 thousand dollar fine.
