North Delta Regional Police Academy

Posted: Updated: Oct 8, 2012 06:33 PM

WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The only police academy in Northeast Louisiana is right here in Monroe.

It serves eleven parishes who depend on it's existence and credibility for their law enforcement, but right now it's closed, as it awaits a move across town, possibility to Delta Community College.

Ouachita Parish Sheriff Deputy Thomas Walker says, "it's vital, you can't be a patrol deputy without the experience and the training you get with an academy."

Ouachita Parish Sheriff Jay Russell says Delta Community College has stepped up to house the North Delta Regional Police Academy.

Sheriff Russell says, "they have the facility there to have the academy, I think it's going to be plenty of room there, they're looking at an instructor there from Delta Community that they are looking at actually running and coordinating the academy for North Delta."

One training session has been missed so far due to the moving process, but Sheriff Russell says it isn't a big deal, "you have a year from when you're hired to go through the academy any how, so a lot of times that's spent training, and ride along and getting a new employee acclimated with his new job."

Russell says having the academy here, would save them a lot of money, "the cost of housing them there, and spending the night Monday through Friday, and feeding them that cost would be tremendous, if we don't have an academy in North Louisiana."

Walker says it also helps build relationships with other departments, "for instance I went through the academy with a couple of guys from Ruston PD and Lincoln S.O. it's been on more than one occasion I've ran across them and actually have that personal relationships where we can help each other more effectively."

If North Delta Law Enforcement Planning Board decides in favor with Delta Community College in November, all equipment and records will be transferred and scheduling will begin.

The North Delta Law Enforcement planning board will vote to decide if Delta Community College is able to house the academy, the vote will be on November 15th.
