Franklin Parish High hires controversial band director

FRANKLIN PARISH, La. (KNOE 8 News) - A former Caldwell Parish High School Band Director, accused of misconduct with a student, is now the band director at Franklin Parish High School.

Caldwell Parish High School's former band director resigned amid allegations of having sex with a student. The alleged victim was 18 years old at the time but Louisiana state law says it's illegal for a teacher to have a sexual relationship with a student.

We're learning now, he's employed in the same position at Franklin Parish High School. Band parent Daphne Marsh-Moran is outraged he's still working with students. "Our concerns as parents is he is just not safe around our children." But after our story ran in late August, breaking news of the accusations, Franklin Parish schools suspended the director pending an investigation.

Marsh-Moran says four parents pulled their kids out of band over the controversy. "Some of them work for the school district and they are more in the know, so it's kind of like, if they know something we don't and they are pulling their children, that's even more concerning."

At a parent meeting Thursday night, Marsh-Moran says school leaders skirted questions over the fate of the director. After concerns arose of the hiring of the director, parents were presented with a reference from Caldwell High saying they didn't know of any wrong doing. "That's not a legal documentation, that's not what we're asking, what we're asking as parents, is show us prove to us this is false, and that our kids are safe." said Marsh-Moran.

Franklin Parish's superintendent and school board president could not be reached for comment.  Charges against the band director are pending at the Caldwell Parish District Attorney's office. We reached out to the band director, but he declined to comment for this story.
