Cotton harvest underway in Arkansas

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La., (KNOE 8 News) - Cotton is being harvested now in Northern Arkansas and farmers are beginning to think about the possibility of a bumper crop this season. Other parts of the state, however, aren't faring quite as well.

In Clay County, Andy Vangilder  says growers are hopeful that rain stays away so the harvest can go smoothly. Vangilder is the staff chairman in the county's cooperative extension office. He says growers are optimistic about this year's crop.

In Poinsett County, cotton growers are nearing the halfway point of harvest. But in other parts of the state the outlook isn't quite so rosy. Officials say the 4 to 6 inches of rain that fell Saturday through Monday may be costly for some Chicot County cotton growers.
