MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - A local drug store has been providing service to Monroe for over 60 years, but now they're forced to do some rebuilding.
Bill Cooper the owner of Spats Drug says, "my mouth hung open about a foot, and we were trying to figure out this was the first time we've ever been burglarized like this."
Cooper is the owner of Spats Drugs and he says when he got the call on Monday that there had been a burglary, his heart sank.
Cooper says, "they did hit our expensive drugs with a vengeance, it was like someone that was there knew what they were getting."
When the thieves realized they couldn't get through this door they decided to take a sledge hammer to the brick.
Cooper says, "they then evidently picked up one of our big garbage cans and started filling it up with our stock on the shelves, we had complete shelves that were completely emptied."
Not only were pills taken but they will even have to rebuild some of the store.
Cooper says, "we're getting the brick replaced first then the metal door will have to be replaced, there is a whole bunch of money involved with this one so, I will have to use some insurance."
He isn't letting this stop him from serving the community, "when a patient comes in we know who it is we know what they're taking and we know what mixes and doesn't mix so we're trying to serve a purpose."
Cooper says they were able to open back as normal on Tuesday.
