MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Unemployment rates in Monroe have dropped from 8.7 percent to 8.1 percent over the past year. Two local educational organizations have teamed up to help put more people back to work.

Vanessa Lee is a success story from Delta Community College's DeltaLINC program.

One year ago, Vanessa Lee decided it was time for a change in her life.

She said, "I was working at a low rate paying job and I was laid off from the job. "

With out her GED, finding a way to support her little girl was a challenge, so she decided to get help. And that's when she found DeltaLINC.

DeltaLINC is a different kind of GED program.

Site coordinator Stephanie Green says it's one of the few programs where mothers can bring their children while they are completing their degree.

Plus, the program encourages continued growth.

Stephanie said,"This is just the beginning, once you get that GED it opens up so many doors. It doesn't have to be a four year university, it doesn't even have to be a two year program."

DeltaLINC offers a wide range of programs from healthcare to business and retail that work around busy schedules and financial constraints.

Kaye Sharbono, program director said, "The GED  is essentially free and once you have it you qualify for a lot of funding sources."

And the learning is unique and hands on. In Vanessa's chosen field of manufacturing she learned work readiness skills that gave her an edge above other applicants.

The work begins in the classroom, where students work on team building and problems solving skills. Then they head down to the lab, where they get hands-on experience with tools they could use in their future careers.

Vanessa completed her entire training in a year, and got a job within two weeks. She says the training that she got changed her life.
