Heavy rain cause sewage back-up in Bastrop

BASTROP, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Residents of the Bastrop Apartments woke up to find their apartments flooded with more than just water Sunday morning.

Willie Washington has been living at the complex for almost a year. He says, "About 6:00 this morning there was some kind of bad smell. I'm thinking it was my garbage...I was laying on my sofa and I stepped down and my feet were wet."

Sewage was coming back up the pipes and out of Washington's sink, shower and toilet. He wasn't alone though, all of Washington's neighbors were also feeling effects of the heavy rain. Another resident of the complex said his shower had about 4 inches of water in it.

Apartment maintenance crews were cleaning the floors, while the City of Bastrop Sewage Department fixed the issue. They tell residents that heavy rain pouring into slow draining pipes can back-up easily. Residents must be cautious about what they flush and put down the sink.
