Sterlington High School Officially Annexed to Sterlington

Posted: Updated:

Sterlington, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Even though Sterlington High School, for more than a decade, has never been officially part of Sterlington, Principal Dell Ashley said they've never been bothered by formalities.

"We've always felt like we were part of the town," Ashley said. "At the time, we've never really been annexed into the city limits."

But on Thursday night, the Ouachita Parish School Board made it official, annexing the high school to Sterlington.

Though no longer a part of the parish, Ashley said any changes will be good ones, with a possible increased police presence and more maintenance.

"You really won't even know we're part of the city, other than, I guess, sort of the paper asset and the police force and some of the maintenance work that's done around the school, the town will be able to help with and that kind of thing," he said.

Most importantly of all, Ashley said all of the schools in Sterlington can now be on the same page.

"The middle school and elementary are in the town. We're the only high school that wasn't," said Ashley. "So now we're all in there together. Complete the unity of our community."

This isn't something students and parents have to wait for.

The change is immediate and already official.
