MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - 100 out of 100,000 women in Louisiana will be affected by breast cancer each year, and a break through at ULM could help them with the fight.
Professors and students at the university have discovered a way to control breast cancer behaviors, fight anti cancer drug resistance and help fend off tumor recurrence.
There are hopes that the drug will be able to keep the breast cancer cells away from the normal cells, allowing for a more aggressive chemotherapy treatment.
One graduate student working on this breakthrough says, it holds a special meaning for him because his mom had breast cancer.
Salman Hosain says, "I have to do something about it, it's not like, I'm treating my mom right now, I'm not a doctor or it's not like I already did something I just started my research here, but some how I feel like I'm doing something for her."
