Isaac still stinging state blood supplies

RUSTON, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Just because Hurricane Isaac's gone, it doesn't mean its damage is.

Local blood centers like LifeShare said Isaac's deepest cut was to their donations.

"We have had many blood drives lost due to the hurricane," LifeShare Donor Recruiter, Josh Caston, said. "Unfortunately, when the hurricane came through on that Friday, we had some school closings and we had to reorganize some things and we lost a lot of units that day."

How many units exactly?

Enough to set both their supplies and the units they're sending to Isaac-hit centers back weeks.

"We lost so much that it is now almost a month later and we're still trying to play catch-up," Caston said.

United Blood Services down in Lafayette, La. also told KNOE 8 News they lost days of blood drives and 1,000 units of blood.

But recovery begins back with blood drives and students at Louisiana Tech showed up this week to try to erase Isaac for good.

For one student, giving blood truly hits home.

"A little over a year ago, my mother, she had a pulmonary embolism, which is a blood clot," La. Tech Senior, Trevor Vicks, said. "You don't want it to have to hit home for you to take something like this serious."

"He's told me about his mother story so I know if it helps one of my close friends' mother, it's probably helping millions of other people," said La. Tech Junior, K'Darious Cash.

LifeShare hopes that attitude will draw even more people to donate so blood centers across the state can gain their supplies back and make sure no one they serve goes without blood.

The La. Tech blood drive will continue from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. in Tolliver Hall until Friday.

Each donation can save three lives.
