MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The Museum of Natural History at ULM has to move out of it's current quarters on the third flood of Sandel Hall by the end of the year.
Dennis Bell is a Biology Instructor at the University: "Sandel Hall is being turned into a "one stop" for student services."
The museum is staffed totally by present and retired faculty and students. Including Bell:
"The original plan was to move to Hanna Hall, which would be renovated. That is still the plan. We are supposed to move in 2015...so the collection would have to be stored until 2015."
The storage site would make it difficult to allow the public to access the collection for the next few years. Museum staff would prefer to keep the museum's display open to the public.
"The university is doing their best to find a place for us on campus, but so far haven't been able to do that."
It is hoped that someone will come forward with a space large enough, close to the campus to keep the numerous displays relating to the area's natural history available for viewing.
Bell: "It is a cultural treasure in the Northeast part of the state."
Over 8,000 visitors toured the museum in the last year. Many were school age, making the collection an excellent recruiting tool for the University.
