WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Neighbors speak out after looking at some discriminatory slurs on a house for more than three years.
WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Two cans of spray paint and a few minutes of labor, all in an effort to cover up some discriminatory slurs on a West Monroe storage house in the 1,200 block of Joe Bill Street.
"I just basically got sick of it," Property Owner Ricky Minnifield said.
Shortly after Minnifield saw our story Monday night, he came prepared to fix the problem. But he's also admitting, he started the stir in the neighborhood.
"But as a last resort and maybe poor planning, I said maybe this will work," Minnifield said.
Before our first story aired, an anti-gay and racial slur, spray painted, for many to see, on the storage house for more than 3 years. And the owner told us his reason.
"People have different beliefs, now, if I told you I'm not gay, you should just leave me alone," the property owner said.
Minnifield blames neighbors for suggesting he was a supporter of same-sex relationships. He went on to say the writings on the wall have helped lower the number of gays in the neighborhood.
"I hope this homosexual gesturing at 5% now, versus a hundred, will stay five and go below."
Despite the owner's beliefs, the sheriff's office says the parish Code Enforcement, still slapped the owner with a citation giving him 20 days to take down any other hateful slurs on the houses.
