BATON ROUGE, La., (KNOE 8 News) - Keep Louisiana Beautiful has awarded $235,000 to groups across the state, as part of the
2012-2013 Healthy Communities Grant Program.
Thirty-five communities and
educational institutions throughout the state have been awarded grants to help
to keep Louisiana beautiful. Recipients in North Louisiana
received nearly $55,000 in grants to help combat litter and beautify their
areas.
The recipients in North
Louisiana include: Shreveport Green; Keep Natchitoches Beautiful; West
Monroe-Ouachita Chamber of Commerce; Keep Ouachita Beautiful; Keep Red River
Beautiful; La Tech University- Department of Performing Arts; Keep Monroe
Beautiful; and Keep Morehouse Beautiful.
Now in its 9th year,
KLB received a record breaking number of grant applications for the
organization. The Healthy Communities Grant Program offers grants to
communities, schools and nonprofit organizations to assist with waste reduction,
recycling and litter prevention programs. Since its inception in 2004, KLB has
awarded more than $1.75 million in grants to carry out its mission of achieving
a cleaner, more economically viable Louisiana. Grants have funded a variety of
projects and programs, including school recycling initiatives, teacher
workshops, law enforcement litter abatement programs, clean campus contests and
neighborhood cleanups. All grantees are required to participate in America
Recycles Day on November 15th or the Great American Cleanup campaign
held March through May annually.
Louisiana Public Broadcasting
(LPB) and all nine University of Louisiana System schools around the state were
also awarded grant funds. LPB will produce PSA's for adults and children, and
will also develop lesson plans for teachers that will be available on the LPB
website. The nine universities in the UL System will create student-led projects
through their service learning programs and participate in events focusing on
environmental and clean-up activities.
Projects of the grant
recipients start in the fall and must be completed by June 1, 2013.
