MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Madison Parish Hospital is under a state investigation. State auditors have been looking into the parish hospital since April, investigating alleged improprieties. A loss of revenue in the millions prompted legislative auditors to set up shop at the Tallulah hospital.
Hospital Service District Board Chairman Thomas Williams welcomes the probe, that is looking into possible mis-management and misappropriation of funds. "With them coming in an we are able to get an objective report and whatever that report says, we'll follow that." said Thomas Williams.
The probe has led to an administrative shake-up. Hospital CEO Alford Wendell resigned in July and a month later, the Madison Parish Police Jury asked five members of the hospital board to quit. "It's not like the board wasn't really trying to do their job, if you've got an administrator in some instances, they trusted the person getting paid to do their jobs." said Wendell.
He says mismanagement were administration level issues. "But of course all of those filter down." Wendell added. Now to help remedy the situation, the new board has hired internal auditors to analyze the hospital's problems and offer solutions to bring the institution into compliance with all state laws. "We are simply trying to get to the bottom of what was going on." said Wendell.
Williams doesn't think any issues found so far are unsolvable and hopes the hospital can move forward and serve it's purpose of caring for the people of Madison Parish. The state investigation is expected to wrap in October. Interim hospital CEO Paula Walker tells KNOE she won't comment until the state audit findings are released.
