WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - A West Monroe family remains in mourning after Charly Pratt died Sunday. The fourth grader at Riverbend Elementary lived in a West Monroe neighborhood on Bennie Breece
WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Early reports say the West Nile virus claimed the life of the fourth grader, but relatives off camera are determined the mosquito bourne illness was not to blame.
WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - It's been an emotional week for students and teachers at Riverbend Elementary School as they cope with the lost of one vibrant fourth grader, Charly Pratt.
Charly's third grade teacher Phillip Allen says, "when you have a tragedy like this it really hits the heart."
Allen says, each year he looks forward to seeing his all of his old students grow, but this year will be different, "she's really going to be missed in this school."
The cause of her death is still a mystery.
Riverbend Elementary Principle Anthony Moore says at first the parents suspected it to be West Nile.
Moore says, "but after speaking with the parent after her passing she said the tests came back negative, so as of right now we don't know what the cause of death was."
Moore says it's been difficult on the students and teachers, and to help deal with some of the emotions they brought in counselors to get them to talk about it.
He says speaking with Charly's family, their hearts are still broken, "it's unexplainable, she still is kind of in shock that, that's her child and she's no long here with us."
The Ouachita Parish Coroner tells us the cause of death is still under investigation.
