WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - A West Monroe family remains in mourning after Charly Pratt died Sunday.

The fourth grader at Riverbend Elementary lived in a West Monroe neighborhood on Bennie Breece Street.

Early reports say the West Nile virus claimed the life of the fourth grader, but relatives off camera are determined the mosquito bourne illness was not to blame.

The Louisiana abatement crews are battling some of the highest West Nile numbers in years. The Bensons, along with so many others in our area, are hoping to avoid the illness and stay healthy.

" I'm staying on the inside. And when I do go outside, I get in the car and leave and then come right back inside.", says Marjorie Benson.

Her husband believes the mosquitoes are only attracted to certain people - a little story told to him by his mother.

"Their body gives off a secretion that mosquitoes love.", explains Carl Benson.

The couple is also dealing with the news that one of their own relatives, who just found out last Friday, had tested positive for the West Nile virus.

The state's Department of Health and Hospitals say there are 39 new cases of West Nile bringing the total in Louisiana to 215.

In the case of Charly Pratt, the cause of death has not been determined and is currently under investigation.
