OUACHITA PARISH, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Money changing hands isn't unusual for one local, small business despite a national recession.

Corey Hamilton owner of Serendipity owner says, "sales have definitely increased especially being a new business, they are constantly growing."

Hamilton is the owner of Serendipity, and his Ouachita Parish business has been open for 2 and a half years now.

Hamilton is seeing numbers of sales going up and he's not alone, parish wide sales are up.

ULM Economic Professor Robert Eisenstadt says the parish has higher than a five percent increase in retail sales, not including automotive sales, from this time last year.

Those numbers puts Ouachita Parish running a half percent higher than the nation.

Eisenstadt says this is positive news for our area, "if the current trend holds, seasonal sales will probably also hold, and we could see a very good year."

Eisenstadt also says the boost in sales can help our local government because they are receiving more tax dollars that can be spent on local services.

The sales tax numbers for September will be in at the beginning of October.
