MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Dozens in Ouachita Parish played a key role in an effort to keep the Ouachita River litter free. The orange bags were in hand along with volunteer boats in the water for the yearly Ouachita River Sweep.

"It's just a great way to help out," Cody Johnson said.

And helping out is first year student Cody Johnson at Louisiana Delta Community College.

"There's all kind of broken beer bottles, Styrofoam, beer cans paper bags, plastic bags, just everything," Johnson said.

Johnson may be on point about finding everything. Volunteers went fishing for tires, coolers, and one group even got their hands on a refrigerator.

At the Forsythe Park Clean-up area, volunteers are taking orange bags into dumpster trailers so the trash can be driven out of the area for good.

Church groups took to the river and on land offering a helping hand in tossing out some of the trash. Pastor John Wesley Jones of Faith Tabernacle Church says his group is committed to making a difference in their community.

"Our church vision is reaching the community and going around the world. And We just want to do our part," Jones said.

Like many dedicating countless hours for the seventh year of the Ouachita River sweep Jones says his group isn't done with their service to the city.

"We've dedicated to, I believe 300,000 hours of community service that we want to partner with our city," Jones said.

Other volunteers, also, ventured over to Sterlington and West Monroe to help clean up those areas along the Ouachita River.

Last year, hundreds helped rack up more than 8 tons of trash from the river and the shoreline. That's about 20 extra large dumpsters.
