MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Teens ages 15 to 20 were involved in more than 10 thousand injury related motor vehicle crashes last year.

Now, the Louisiana State Police, and State Farm are joining together to bring a teen driver safety event called "Celebrate My Drive."

Gail Dupuy says, "a young man who had been partying all week and was coming down off drugs crossed the lane on Forsythe and crashed into her and she was pronounced dead right away."

Gail Dupuy is remembering the day her 17 year old daughter Leigh Ann Carlton was killed by an impaired driver, it was a little after 5 on a Sunday, July 1st 2001 when her life changed forever.

In 2011 in Louisiana over 70 thousand people were injured in a vehicle crash and driver impairment was responsible for 43 percent of the fatal crashes.

Dupuy says while this is not a new issue it's always important to teach new drivers the consequences of driving while impaired.

Dupuy says, "we always have new young people coming up out there who are getting behind the wheel and believe me it's not something you want to do, you don't want to have the responsibility of taking someone else's life and from my point of view that's not your job."

Leigh Ann would have been 29 today.

"Celebrate My Drive" will run Saturday from 10 to 1, at the Pecanland Mall Center Court.
