Lee Jr. High gets vegetable garden

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Lee Junior High got a new addition today, a gardening plot full of soon-to-be vegetables and herbs.

Kerry Heafner of the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo is hoping to spread the love of growing your own fruits and vegetables and he's starting with students at Lee Junior High.

"If baseball is the nation's favorite past time, gardening is the second favorite pastime," says Heafner, "it can teach you lessons from everything in basic science, basic biology, to economics can be taught with a garden."

Science lessons as well as life lessons are what Bessie Bowers is hoping to teach with this garden. She expects her special needs class of five to learn patience and responsibility.

"When they graduate from high school, they have to go to different areas of life and they can't all go to college, but however they can work in a workforce," says Bessie Bowers, "I figured today, they could work in a garden growing different products."

With funding from Modern Woodmen of North Louisiana, the garden project is starting to take shape. Heafner says if the students take care of the garden as instructed, they will have a full harvest later this fall. Students are really looking forward to what their garden may produce and hope it tastes great.
