MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - One local organization is partnering with the Swanson Center for Youth, it's a program that organizers say will benefit the youth and homeless pets.

Juvenile inmate, Quinton C. says, "I'm very much an animal lover I'm looking forward to working with the animals, and working with the other youth and training the animals."

Youth from the Swanson Center for Youth will help build the kennel, and once it's finished five dogs from the Humane Society will be housed there.

Between the applications and extensive interviews, it's not an easy process to be selected by the directors, to work with the dogs.

Germaine Simon Deputy Director of Operations says, a dog trainer will come in to teach the kids a pre-approved curriculum.

Simon says, other programs like this across the country have turned children from violent behavior to a more kind outlook for people and pets, as well as teaching them to manager their own behaviors.

He says initially reaction about the program from the children was mixed, "some of them didn't have any knowledge or not comfortable around dogs, but others were real comfortable and were real receptive."

They hope to have the kennel open in October.
