WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - We have seen more cases of West Nile Virus this year not just in humans, but also in horses.

Dr. Clint Harper with Coopers Veterinary Clinic says they have seen a few cases, here of West Nile in horses, he says horses are more susceptible to the virus than people are.

Dr. Harper says a few ways to tell if your horse may have the virus, they start by laying around or not moving around very well, then they will develop a fever which can be hard to tell; but they will go off feed and at the worst of it they will get wobbling in the back end and have difficulty moving their facial muscles

He says there are steps you can take to prevent West Nile, "vaccination is number one we have a good vaccine that works good in horses, controlling the water around your place to make sure there isn't any standing containers of water that mosquitoes can breed in use of fans, fans are another thing if you have a stalled horse, make sure you have a fan blowing on them mosquitoes don't like to fly in the high velocity wind."

Dr. Harper says it can take up to 2 weeks for the vaccination to become effective.

Dr. Harper also says dogs and cats normally will not get sick from West Nile, but the disease can kill birds like parrots and parakeets.
