MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - A Monroe police officer resigns after admitting to using drugs, according to Chief Quentin Holmes.

Former Officer Kenneth Johnson was placed on paid leave last week after an accident on the 5200 Block of Desiard Street.

The chief says Johnson was in a police cruiser. Company policy is for any city worker involved in a vehicle accident to submit to a drug test.

Holmes says Johnson took the test, but before the results were returned to the department, the former officer admitted to using meth.

The chief says, at that instance he was placed on leave pending an investigation.

Wednesday, the chief announced Johnson's resignation from the department. This after, city leaders opened up a criminal investigation on the former officer and they were going to put Johnson on leave without pay.

An early investigation shows the former cop used about 4 grams of meth. The drugs were used in K-9 unit training programs.

Johnson was involved in the K-9 unit for the Monroe Police Department.

His K-9 partner was found dead over the weekend. The chief doesn't suspect foul play. However the dog's body has been sent to LSU Shreveport for a necropsy.

The criminal investigation continues and the former officer remains free.
