MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The Ouachita Parish Mosquito Abatement voted to spend $300,000 more on aerial sprayings after Isaac hit our area.

The director of the Ouachita Parish Mosquito Abatement, Shannon Rider says after all the rainfall we've received last week more spraying is needed to kill the mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes lay their eggs in damp soil and when it dries the eggs can lay dormant for anywhere from 5 to 10 years. When the waters come over them, they hatch, and with water sitting there it allows them to emerge as adults.

Rider says they are holding off on starting the aerial spraying until the eggs have had time to hatch.

Rider says, "even if it means you know there is a few more days, of aggravation and nuisance from them it's better than to kill more and kill them all at once, than spray and kill a few and the primary emergence comes off later."

Rider says after they moved the $300,000 to help with the aerial spraying, they're left with a $1 million balance to help continue fighting the bite.
