MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Dogs groomed to perfection, have descended on the Monroe Civic Center for the 40th annual Cottonland Cluster Dog Show. People traveled all over the country, even driving through the effects of Isaac to arrive.

"We were driving 10 hours into what could have been a hurricane." said Karen Mountain. She said she took her chances driving an RV in heavy wind from Austin, Texas to show her doberman pinscher.

But with the Civic Center designated as an evacuee facility, she was concerned the event would be canceled. "It's a long show, so it's worth a 10 hour drive one way, unless you lose all four days, then it's a very sad 10 hour drive back." said Mountain. On the other hand, Robyn Elliott was worried about the weather, so she waited until the last minute with her giant schnauzer Lola, to decide whether to make the journey.

"I left Dallas at 5 this morning got here, got my dog set up." said Robyn Elliott. 1400 dogs will compete and with each of those dogs comes at least one or more humans, pumping millions into area hotels, restaurants and businesses. The Monroe Chamber of Commerce says it is the most economically beneficial event for the city. Mountain says she and her dog look forward to their Monroe visit each year, "You have great food and great hospitality this is a good venue." said Mountain.

The show is open to the public and lasts until September 3. Admission is $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for children. All proceeds benefit the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's K-9 unit.
