RICHLAND PARISH (KNOE 8 News) - In the wake of Tropical Storm Isaac, northeast Louisiana farmers have been scrambling to get their crops ready to save their livelihood.
Farmer Elliot Colvin says soy bean growers have had an ideal growing season - until now.
With the threat of heavy rain and wind looming crop growers have been working around the clock trying to save their crops.
"Well it could mean your livelihood.", Elliot says.
The farming community has come together ensuring each crop growers harvest isn't destroyed.
In fact, Colvin spent the day Wednesday harvesting soybeans for a neighbor.
Mike Adcock says his experience isn't unique. He says farmers all across the region are working together as a team.
"When you need help there is somebody there with a hand out, willing to help.", Mike Adcock says.
And although some of the soybeans aren't quite ready to be picked--meaning thousand dollar losses for the growers.
Adcock says it's better to lose a little than a lot.
"if we wait and bad weather moves in then they'll start losing value and they will start shattering, we'll start losing our crops."
Now the farmers will take their crops to the grain elevator where the lines have been backed up for days.
In the meantime, both harvesters hope the ground won't stay wet for more than a few days.
"the longer the rain lasts, the longer it stays wet, the more problems we'll have."
Farmers experienced 1 billion dollars in agriculture losses during hurricane Gustav in 2008.
