BATON ROUGE, La., (KNOE 8 News) - The state says it's about to put another $2 1/2 million dollars into the state's treasury this week.
Those dollars are money that hasn't been claimed by anyone.
The state routinely hangs on to money that wasn't claimed by those to whom it was owed. Money from unclaimed paychecks, gift certificates, mutual funds and stocks, uncashed state income tax return checks, not to mention unclaimed oil and gas royalties and even apartment deposits and abandoned bank accounts.
Some people, notably people who haven't cashed their state tax refund checks, were notified by mail and more than two thousand have responded and claimed an estimated $1.7 million dollars already.
According to State treasurer John Kennedy, an estimated $27 million in all was returned to claimants this past year.
If unclaimed, the money can't be spent by state government and winds up just sitting in the state treasury until it is claimed.
