ALEXANDRIA, La., (KNOE 8 News) - Officials are saying that a highly contagious bacterial infection is believed to be the killer of an estimated 600 fish at the Alexandria Zoo earlier this month.

The cause of the fish-kill is being attributed to the water temperature reaching 80 degrees because of the extreme heat Louisiana has been experiencing.

Most fish are susceptible to a disease called Columnaris disease, and they are more likely to get it after they have experienced some type of environmental stress and when the water rises to the upper level of their preferred body temperature.
