Rural development project at LA Tech

RUSTON, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Federal and state officials toured Louisiana Tech University to discuss the I-20 Corridor Accelerator project.

Tech and Winrock International Institute for Agriculture Development have joined forces to create a project to help boost the economy in rural towns. The award-winning project is 1 of 13 in the nation that has received funding through a multi-agency challenge to create jobs.

"I think we've got a great opportunity to have a successful project that's impactful for our communities," says LA Tech professor Dr. Dave Norris, Jr.

Matt Erskine of the Economic Development Administration challenges Tech's new program to be successful so it can stand as a model for the rest of the country.

"When rural America is growing and thriving, the American economy is thriving," says Erskine, "it's such a crucial component to the fabric of our country."

As part of the I-20 Corridor Accelerator project, Louisiana Tech will offer group and one-on-one job training small Louisiana communities. The project hopes to travel to areas like Bernice, Delhi, and Springhill to offer small towns big opportunities.
