Richland Parish Schools battle the bully problem

Posted: Updated:

RAYVILLE,La. (KNOE 8 News) - One school district has decided to take on the bullies before the new school year begins. Richland Parish education leaders are looking into changing up the bullying policy in hopes of slowing down the violence. Board members are scheduled to make those changes Tuesday.

"Kids can be harsh these days," one local said.

A harshness Richland Parish school leaders are hoping to put a stop to.

"It's really how you're raised...honestly," another local said.

Some blame the parents for teaching the little ones how to bully. But at Rayville High's "Back to School Night" the principal says moms and dads are getting a lesson on how to keep bullies out of the classroom and off the school buses.

"I think it's a really good thing. They try to help kids grow up in the school. Try to give them a good education and try to cut that bullying out."

The current policy against bullying has been on the books since 2004. It starts off by saying "statements or actions threatening other students, school personnel, or school property shall be unacceptable." Then it goes into how workers and teachers should report it. Then after if the student is found in violation of the rules the policy states he or she "may also constitute a violation of state or federal criminal statute."

"Parents need to be careful of what they're saying and doing in front of their kids. It can really change like that," a local said.

The board president says school leaders are scheduled to upgrade the bullying policy not only for students but all school workers.
