RUSTON, La. (KNOE 8 News) - New Living Word Ministries is about to open their doors for the 2012-2013 school year, and that has many people wondering are they ready?
The State Department of Education required the school to build before accepting 165 students from the Louisiana Scholarship Program.
According to Senator Robert Kostelka in District 35 students from a C, D, or F rated school can attend New Living Word School, this is apart of the Louisiana Scholarship Program.
The Louisiana Scholarship Program provides the opportunity for low income students attending failing schools to attend non-public schools at the state expense.
So the question remains, are tax dollars are being spent wisely, this has local state leaders at odds on the issue.
Senator Robert Kostelka District 35 says, "not only is the public money being used for it, and the taxpayers paying for it, those schools don't have to meet the same requirements as the public schools."
Representative Patrick Jefferson says, "I think they are on the ground ensuring that the program is running in a manner where tax payers dollars will not be compromised and where learning will occur."
We tried to get in contact with the New Living Words Ministry and they refused to comment for our story.
