LINCOLN PARISH, La. (KNOE 8 News)- In an effort to end Lincoln Parish's decades-long desegregation case, four Ruston elementary schools have swapped grade levels.

Only kindergartner through second graders will attend Hillcrest and Glenview elementary schools, while Ruston and Cypress Springs Elementary Schools will house third through fifth grade. The changes are to balance out the race ratio as part of a federal desegregation order.

"This will be different for us because we have a whole different clientele of kids, with ages and so forth" said Hillcrest Elementary Principal Patrice Hilton.  "It's going to be a good thing so we can focus on only three grade levels" she added.

Because of the changes, Hilton's summer was filled with everything from book to chair swaps with Ruston Elementary and even teachers were exchanged between schools. "Our ones that are third fourth and fifth grade teachers went to Ruston Elementary and their kindergarten, first, and second grade teachers are coming here."

Despite all of the shuffling, Hilton feels her school is ready to start the school year and although she'll miss the older kids at Hillcrest she's excited to have a new situation.  "It will be fun to find ways to reach kindergarten, first and second."
