MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News)- Plans to turn Neville High School into a charter school has been in the works for nearly a year now. But after Tuesday's school board meeting, it's not looking like that plan will be reality anytime soon.

In May, Monroe School Board approved of Neville High School's type 2 charter application. But first a third party consultant had to be brought in to make sure everything was working smoothly and that consultant, Kimberly Williams told the board Tuesday, everything was in order to give the application the green light.

"They have met the four conditions, so the third party's recommendations is to approve based upon the application." Williams told the board. Neville High School's aim was to open in time for the upcoming school year. But board members voiced concerns about the process moving too quickly.

"We were just under the gun with this. we're not saying we're going to deny this charter we're just saying we need more time." said School Board President Verbon Muhammad and in a 4-3 vote, it was decided to push back Neville's chartership efforts until 2013. Board member Vickie Krutzer, Mickey Traweek and Vickie Dayton all voted against the postponement.
"Well because I believe we did have enough time to get everything in order." said board member Vickie Krutzer.

"Well I'm disappointed in not only the final decision but also the comments made by both the board and the audience." said Neville Board member Ronnie Shelby.  Although feeling defeated, the Neville board says they will move forward with their efforts.  "We're just going to have to regroup and look at all of our options" said Neville board member Susan Weaver.
