Jonesboro heads to Court of Appeals

Posted: Updated:

JONESBORO, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The town of Jonesboro will be in appellate court Tuesday facing off against a former mayor.

Last year former Jonesboro Mayor Don Essmeier and two other concerned citizens brought Jonesboro to district court accusing members of the city council of not following proper budget protocol. According to Essmeier, the council voted on a new budget in early 2011 when one was already in place. The judge ruled in Essmeier's favor, but the town quickly filed an appeal.

"For them to come back and take the same issues before court again," says Mayor Leslie Thompson, "it tells you that we're not getting a fair shake and that there's something wrong with our judicial system."

Mayor Thompson is very optimistic about the appeal saying "a different day, a different judge." Court will be in session Tuesday, August 7, 2012, at 1:30pm in Shreveport.
