New Insurance Laws

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - August 1st marked a lot of changes statewide regarding laws, some of those changes effect you as a driver, but these changes could make things easier on you.

You are required to have proof of insurance anytime you get in your car, and there is some good news for those who drive with it.

Many people drive on busy road ways without any proof of insurance, and there are new laws cracking down on those people driving without it.

One of the new statewide laws says if you can not provide proof of insurance your vehicle may be impounded.

This law repeals the one in 2010 that prohibited impounding of a vehicle on a first offense, unless the driver posed an imminent threat to the public.

Another law allows drivers to display electronic proof of insurance.

Major Mike Moore with the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office says he believes this is better for the community.

While the new law allows you to provide proof of insurance to be displayed on a cell phone or other devices such as a tablet.

Originals and copies of insurance cards and policies are still accepted.
