West Monroe fire leaves family homeless

WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News)  - Ouachita Parish Fire Department responded to a house fire call in West Monroe.

The home of Emily Mathey and her four family members caught fire Sunday around 10:00 a.m. When firefighters arrived on the scene on Susan Drive, the fire had already engulfed the kitchen and living room.

"My son was running around the house, and my girlfriend went to get him, and he was in front of the door and as soon as she picked him up she saw flames," says Rickey Trainer who was inside at the time of the fire, "If my grandma wouldn't have put those French doors in the back, we would have had to find some other way to get out."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but firefighters believe the sparked started near the family's couch.

"I flicked a cigarette and it landed on the couch but I don't think that's what it was, because that was like an hour and a half before," says Trainer, 17, "so I'm thinking something shorted out."

Regardless of what started the fire, all involved are grateful that everyone made it out safely.
