WEST MONROE La. (KNOE 8 News) - Chick-Fil-A has been grabbing attention across the country after the CEO, Dan Cathy proudly proclaimed his support for traditional marriage.
Immediately people began taking sides on Cathy's view, some even proclaimed August 1st as Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day.
This has not only grabbed attention across the country but right here in West Monroe.
Traffic was wall to wall not only outside but inside, since the store opened Wednesday morning.
Traffic was backed up from the restaurant, all the way to the interstate, causing West Monroe Police to be called in at noon and again at 5:00 to direct and control traffic.
Managers told us they had to stop serving breakfast 15 minutes early because they started running out of breakfast items. They also said they starting running out of some sides, such as side salads.
There were also supporters holding up sign in honor of 1st Amendment Rights.
There is another side to the story and Sunny Diaz one of the founders of the University of Louisiana at Monroe's Gay Straight Alliance says it's not that they don't support Freedom of Speech.
Diaz says, "it's his right to say those things however the fact that Chick-Fil-A donates money to those organizations such as Focus on the Family, Exodus International, groups that believe being gay is a disease, and can be cured and gay people should be shunned into a closet, that's something we don't agree with we don't want our money going towards those things."
The manager at the new Chick-Fil-A in West Monroe told us they expected to double their profits, and the other Chick-Fil-A in West Monroe already doubled their profits by 5:00.
