MONROE La. (KNOE 8 News) - Less funding for some medical providers may provide a big challenge in treating patients, but it's now becoming a reality for EA Conway, which is Monroe's public hospital.
The OB Department could see cuts, even the ER, which is a frightening thought to a lot of people.
EA Conway is the only public hospital in Monroe, and now its a waiting game to see how much of an impact these cuts will have.
LSU Health told us specific cuts have yet to be determined.
Senator Francis Thompson says one of the possibilities is down sizing OB unit at EA Conway.
Thompson says right now over sixty people are born at the hospital per month, and cutting that department down is concerning.
He adds, those with Medicaid will see an impact, but they're not the only ones.
"Those who have no insurance and those who can't afford insurance that they need, like for their children, for their adult parents and even for the middle income they would be affected by this, Thompson said."
Sally Croom with the LSU Health Shreveport released this statement for us, saying quote,
"We take these matters very seriously. We have to make sure we maintain our obligation to our patients who have chronic conditions and those who are under our care so that we don't make any sudden changes that would adversely affect them."
