Louisiana Corn Crops

TALLULAH, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The hot temperatures, and little to no rain across the country is causing many states to experience drought.

The drought is causing crops to die, and money to be lost; but, the picture isn't so bleak in Louisiana.

R. L. Frazier the County Agent from Madison Parish says, this has been a better season for the corn overall in the state of Louisiana.

Frazier says rain came at the perfect time and moderate temperatures have helped the corn crop thrive, but farmer's like Nathan Lee say they aren't out of the clear just yet.

The low water in the Mississippi River could hurt them because there are less options for shipping their crops.

"If they end up shutting the Mississippi River down, it could be a serious problem, our crops have to set in the field once our elevators get full and all, Lee said."

Frazier says the Midwest crops are suffering from drought, but that doesn't directly affect the cost or profits of the farmers here in Louisiana.
